Imaging Sciences: I can’t wait!
Yes, I am proud to say that I survived six months of clinical clerkships, including Medicine, a heavy hitter. I appreciate clinical medicine for what it is, but good golly, I am glad to be in graduate school! I am in Bioengineering, focusing on biomedical imaging via the HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces program. Doesn’t it sound awesome? Well, that’s cuz it is ;)
Dragonfly tattoo!
When I was a teenager, I told my mom I wanted a tattoo. She laughed — no, scoffed — and that was the end of my tattoo prospects then. Recently, I asked my mom if she’d have a cow if I got a tattoo. She was like, “Why do you want it? PLEASE DON’T DO IT. I know someone at work who has one and now she wishes she did not have it.” Then she paused to ask, “What does it mean, have a cow?” and resumed freaking out, “No no no, don’t do it, think of something else.” So I told her, “To have a cow means to freak out and go crazy.” She considers and responds, “Oh. Okay. So I have a cow. At least you think about it.” I cannot do justice to her broken English accent as she says this, but it is pure hilarity. I love my mommy =)
My tattoo artist was Carla at No Ka Oi on South Street. She is AWESOME, an amazing artist and a professional in every way, which I particularly appreciated since this is my first tattoo. (Please ignore the awful bags under my eyes; I got two hours of sleep the night before. I probably would have fallen asleep there if not for the needle digging into my flesh.) The pain was pretty bad but tolerable, especially after Kara brought me a magazine to distract me. My skin is still puffy, and the tattoo still has to peel and heal, but I LOVE IT!!! I knew Carla would be awesome about the colors (she had awesome, awesome eyeshadow…and I need to find a new adjective). The dragonfly is exactly as I wanted, down to the color melding in the wings and the purple burnout. I also emphasized that I wanted it to follow the curves of my anatomy, so that it looked like it belonged on me rather than stamped on me. The dragonfly’s body follows the curve of my scapula perfectly. YAY!!!
