Penn Med starts mid-August, with a bunch of crazy mixers as giddy MS1's settled in and got to know all their amazing classmates. The variety of experiences we all represent collectively is incredible. I was too busy running around, getting comfy, and getting drunk for the very first time (at the ripe old age of 23 and 5/6) to take any photos, but here are a few from other sources.
![]() The MD-PhD Entering Class of 2005 had a picnic at the home of the program director, Skip Brass. All the girls were present, but some of the guys were missing. We're a relatively normal, fun-looking bunch, aren't we?

There's a bar/lounge/club called Trago's that's pretty cool. The dude next to me, Anthony, is actually a college buddy of the Duke kids here at Penn. Kevin (next dude) is in my class and was kind enough to unlock my mailbox for me when I was too incompetent to do so myself. No one ever said mastery of combination locks was required for med school. Crystal was visiting the Duke alums as well. |
![]() | Our anatomy group decided to check out Twenty21 during Restaurant Week. Perty good stuff, but don't go for the sweetbread - I found out it's a euphemism for some kind of organ meat...Crazy French. L to R, Julia, me, Kristin, Jenn. |
![]() Prescott came to visit for Halloween, ready to go with his fireman gear. Joining him in the spirit of public service, I was a police officer. While I fully intended to milk my annual opportunity to dress sketchy, no one would ever actually think I could be a beguiling seductress - you can see, I don't even stand like a girl. The skirt that actually came with the outfit (not the one shown) was maybe 10" long - with my butt, you'd have thought I was wearing a wide belt and had forgotten to wear the skirt. Prescott was more authentic as a fireman. |

Ingrid and I crashed with Wei during The Game '05. (Ignore the date; Wei apparently can't figure out her camera =p) The girls' night out was the best part...Harvard and Yale are not known for football skills. |
The MD-Phd's & friends had a potluck Thanksgiving dinner the weekend before turkey break. I didn't contribute much to the feast except for the empty stomach I brought. A group of 25 people finished off two turkeys plus at least 2 of every kind of side dish. ![]() |
![]() Incomplete MD-PhD shot (apparently not everyone heard when i hollered, "Silly faces!"): Dave, Kiran, Eugene, Stephan, Terry, Mona, Cynthia, me, Karla, Alanna. |
![]() Pscott and I made a non-traditional Thanksgiving meal of jambalaya, as well as the most essential part of Thanksgiving, stuffing. He's actually quite adept in the kitchen and cooked the whole meal himself. We also went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has a cool set-up with artwork recreating a scene or time period, as if you were walking into a diorama. The Japanese tea house has a nifty little crawl-in door for everyday use, while special guests may use the large entryway on the side.
![]() In addition to monthly paycheck parties and dinner club outings (in attempt to check out all the yummy eats in town), the MD-PhDs like to try fun things such as embarassing ourselves on the rink. So we're not quite Ice Capades, but we sure can be entertaining. Eugene and Dave showed us their graceful sides, while Cynthia twirled around us, and we all realized how out of shape we are...Eugene, Karla, Alanna, Cynthia, me, Mona, Dave.
